Vircura is currently producing industrial hemp hurd, which is being used in the building industry as an alternative sustainable building material.
Our hemp is grown in South Australia by local farmers. After harvest, the industrial hemp biomass is transported to our site at Monarto. It is then processed using a specialised hemp processor that produces four products: hurd, fibre, fines and dust, all of which have uses in a range of applications.
From planting to construction, the supply chain typically spans just five months.
Vircura is currently actively working with builders to supply hemp hurd.
Hemp has been used for building for thousands of years, and hundreds of hemp houses are already built in Australia.
Building with hemp has many benefits, including:
- Natural insulation and acoustics,
- Fire resistance with a BAL rating of 60/60/60,
- Resistance to mould and termites,
- Hypoallergenic properties,
- Carbon neutrality (each cubic meter of hemp can also sequester 110kg of carbon; it sequesters carbon whilst growing, then absorbs carbon whilst curing in a built structure).
